Cardboard Mosaics

Cardboard Mosaics

Save those cardboard boxes! Today for Art at Home, we’ll be using them two ways to create beautiful cardboard mosaics. This project is adaptable for all ages and ability levels and provides a healthy dose of art therapy during an anxiety-filled time. For little kids, parents may need to cut the cardboard tessera if their hands aren’t quite strong enough. For big kids (and grown-ups!) I challenge you to take this idea and RUN with it! I’d love to see some beautifully crafted mosaic portraits, stills lives, and whatever else you can think up! If you enjoy this project, like, comment, and share the fun.

  • A piece of sturdy cardboard, any size will do!

  • Tessera materials (cardboard, paper, magazine clippings, etc.)

  • Scissors

  • Something to color with (tempera paint sticks, crayons, markers, etc.)

  • Glue

  • Pencil (if creating an image)

*We receive a small commission for products purchased through the affiliate links above, at no cost to you. We have used and LOVE these art supplies and we’re proud to recommend them! Just consider us your shopping companion to save you from a drawer full of mediocre art materials 😉

Recycled Cactus Art

Recycled Cactus Art

Here in Southern California, cacti of all kinds decorate the landscape with their prickly silhouettes. As a New Englander, more accustomed to maple trees, evergreen forests, and snow (lots of snow), this scenery fascinates me. The shapes and colors, the way the sun hits the sand, the sheer variety of flora and fauna surrounding me – it all serves as endless inspiration for art projects, from drawings to watercolors, paints, and more.

This cactus sculpture is one such project. With a keen interest in sustainable art that reuses as much as possible and consumes as little as possible, this project checks all the boxes.

There are steps, yes, but this project thrives on the process, so let your kids (or yourself!) explore the materials available to you. Don’t have popsicle sticks (eat some popsicles!), find another rigid material that could do the trick. How about a knife from those pesky, seemingly impossible to un-request to-go packs that came with last night’s take out meal? Instead of using paper for the nopales of your cacti, find some bubble wrap, packing material, or paper bags? The options surround you if you know how to see them!

  • Cardboard Tube
  • Cardboard Base
  • Markers, Paint, or Crayons
  • Tape or…
  • Hot Glue Gun*
  • School Glue
  • Scissors
  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Toothpicks
  • Paper or Bubble Wrap
  • X-Acto Knife*

*adult use only

Galaxy Bottles 2 Ways

Galaxy Bottles 2 Ways

Galaxy Bottles 2 Ways

This fun process-based project is a gift that keeps on giving. Enjoy the beauty of color-mixing (and glitter!), and then appreciate the therapy that comes with watching these bottles whirl and swirl. Seriously, even I found a few deep breaths watching the glitter bubble explosions. We’ve shared two versions of this project, one using colored water and baby oil, and another with cotton balls taking center stage. Let us know which one you like best in the comments!

    • Glass/Plastic Bottle with a securely tightening lid
    • Water Food Coloring or Liquid Watercolors
    • Baby Oil
    • Cotton Balls
    • Glitter
    • Long Skewer or Chop Stick
    • Strong Glue (if sealing for small children)
