Hammers, nails, and kids, oh my!

Hammers and nails. Probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think about art for kids. Well, I’m here to tell you kids LOVE building things! Working in three dimensions opens up a whole new world of creative problem-solving, and when we show children that we trust them to safely use real tools, their confidence flourishes.

That said, a step-by-step process help a lot in guiding the choices of young artists. In our summer camps, wood-working projects such as building a book stand and creating a “bug hotel” provide an opportunity for artists to practice basic building skills: how to hold a hammer and properly drive a nail, when to use glue to strengthen a joint, and how to make sure craftsmanship finds its way into your artwork, for example.

So bring on the hammers (and eye protection!) and see how artists as young as six can successfully hammer and nail their way to an incredible finished project that is both functional and super cool.
